Xiaoman is the eighth of the twenty-four solar terms, the second solar term in summer. Between May 20 and 22 every year, when the sun reaches 60 degrees of the yellow meridian, it is called Xiaoman. After Xiaoman, the weather gradually turns from warm to hot, marking the debut of summer, and precipitation will gradually increase, the folk proverb “Xiaoman Xiaoman, the river is gradually full”.
Traditional Chinese customs include: sacrificing to the god of carts, praying for silkworms, “watching the yellow of wheat”, eating bitter vegetables, transplanting rice seedlings, and the Xiaoman Festival.
Xiaoman's “three wishes”: “bitter vegetables show”: the temperature rises, the rainfall increases, bitter vegetables have already flourished and leafy;
The “withered grass dead”: withered grass, a kind of shade-loving plants, to the early summer can not stand the wind and rain, sun exposure, withered one after another;
“Wheat arrives in autumn”: we will see wheat that is about to ripen and will soon have a good harvest.
Xiaoman, means fullness without loss, fullness without fullness, fullness without overflow. It reminds us that too much complacency may lead to failure, while modesty brings benefits. Thus, Xiaoman symbolizes the most ideal state of life.
